CONCERT SCHEDULE
August 27, 2009 8:00 PM |
Washington County Historic Courthouse 101 West Pine St. Stillwater
This concert will be an exploration of sound and
live visuals, with our friend Kevork Mourad joining Brooklyn Rider in
what has been an ongoing and fruitful artistic relationship. Kevork is
a Syrian-born Armenian visual artist known for his unique technique of
live painting in partnership with musicians, forming a counterpoint of
art and music in collabortative development. Brooklyn Rider has worked
with Kevork in a variety of settings, including museum residencies in
Nara, Japan, the Rubin Museum in New York, Harvard University and the
Art Institute of Chicago as part of the Silk Road Ensemble. Many of you
may recognize Kevork’s work from his beautiful sketchings that have
been the basis of several Stillwater Music
Festival posters. Mourad’s collaborations have included a live
performance with Djivan Gasparyan, (renowned Armenian duduk player) at
Cooper Union in April 2001 and a benefit show including a painting
exhibit and performance for the Coalition to Ban Land Mines at Grace
Cathedral in San Francisco, in tandem with George Winston (pianist). He
performed with Kinan Azmeh, (clarinetist and composer) at Juilliard’s
“Beyond the Machine” f0estival produced by Mari Kimura, in a project
based on the epic of Gilgamesh. The same piece was also performed at
the Chelsea Museum of Art in New York, the City University of New York,
and recently closer to Gilgamesh's home in Uruk (modern-day Iraq),
against the three-thousand-year-old wall of the old city of Damascus,
Syria.

Cited by the Irish Sunday Tribune as one of the
hundred most influential Irish men and women in the fields of
entertainment, politics and sports in the year 2000, as well as one of
the most important musicians to come out of Ireland in the last fifty
years, Martin Hayes is a musical hero of ours!!! A native of County
Clare, to which he returns for extended periods several times a year,
Martin Hayes has been based in the United States, now living in
Connecticut, for the past20twenty-three years. He has drawn musical
inspiration from sources as diverse as the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt,
the Spanish viola da gamba master, Jordi Savall, and the jazz genius,
John Coltrane, but remains grounded in the music he grew up with in his
own locality, Maghera, Feakle, East County Clare where the music which
he learned from his late father, P. Joe Hayes, the legendary leader of
the long-lived Tulla Ceili Band, profoundly influenced his musical
accent and ideas forever after. In his younger days he played in an
experimental electric band in Chicago; recently he has composed scores
for film, theatre, and modern dance, and has collaborated with
like-minded musicians from other genres, such as jazz guitarist, Bill
Frisell and eclectic violinist Darol Anger. He views these explorations
as a means of shedding light on his ongoing artistic journey, as well
as a challenge to any rigidity of thought. The fundamental artistic
quest is to go deeper and deeper within traditional Irish music and
himself.
We met with Martin the other day, and learning traditional Irish
tunes from him is a gift. We can’t wait to share with you both of these
collaborations. See you in August!!!!
